MIRELIA CHAVEZ

She’s stuck. Mirelia Chavez has landed herself in a tricky situation. In her attempt to live up to her great-grandfather Cesar Chavez, she has risen through the ranks to become a distinguished leader of targeted immigrant workers in California. Mirelia always felt she needed to become something special. She wanted to become someone that people would remember forever; she thought she had her whole life. However, it seems as if her time has run out. After the tumultuous 2016 election, tensions are at an all-time high. Mirelia’s government contacts are nowhere to be found. She is at her wits end and is truly terrified to face what is to come next. She hears talk of riots—devastating, nation-wide crippling riots. For the first time in a long time, she needs a new plan.

Mirelia, a broken woman at this point, retires to her family library—a place of true comfort. She is devastated to watch her life’s work crumble in front of her. She has always wanted to fill her tio abuelo’s shoes, to rise up, to take charge, to be a leader. Mirelia’s need to be a leader stems from various challenges she has faced, both physically and mentally. Her battle with polio as a child has left her in a wheelchair. Her need to live up to her tio abuelo’s past success. Her constant longing to make something of her life. Mirelia understands the intricacies of her situation, yet at the same time she can’t seem to grasp the solution she desperately needs to stop the seemingly inevitable riot. Mirelia is no stranger to violence, however she senses the destruction to come. She knows this is a make-or-break moment not only for her movement, but for the entire nation.

Mirelia has always trusted her intuition. She is a woman of feelings, inklings, and everything in between. She believes people have their destinies, she just can’t seem to see hers. In the midst of her thought, something draws her to an old bible she has never seen. Again, being a woman of feelings and inklings, she is entranced by it. What she finds will alter who Mirelia is as a person forever; being as stubborn as she is, it will confound not only her, but everyone at the riot the next day.
