OTTO APPLEQUIST

Otto Appelquist is a Swedish immigrant who moved to Utah in 1903 with his lifelong friend Joe Hill. Otto, in contrast to his friend Joe, is particularly cynical and pessimistic. Otto always felt overshadowed by Joe since he was never recognized for his contributions to Joe’s songs, as he would help Joe create the lyrics. He also notably has a fair amount of jealousy for Hill.

Otto and Joe were involved in an unfortunate love triangle over the “Sweetheart of Utah,” Hilda Erikson who was once Appelquist’s fiance. Unbeknownst to the public, Otto shot his friend Joe in a in an outburst of rage in what was assumed to be an argument over Hilda. This indirectly led to Joe’s arrest and eventual execution after he was mistakenly convicted for the murder of the Morrison family.

In Otto’s attempt to make amends with his friend after shooting him, Joe gives him the letter that is later found by Mirelia. Otto was particularly unstable after his engagement with Hilda ended, which is part of the reason as to why he shot Joe Hill in the first place and why he then decided to flee Utah. Otto wishes to create a new life outside Utah and does exactly that after he flees. Not much is known about Otto Appelquist; for certain, he was always quite a mysterious person and kept to himself much of the time. This character will act as a way to connect all pieces of the plot together, most notably concerning Joe Hill and how the letter ended up where Mirelia would find it years later.
