Some words from Ellie (The Last of Us)

"Everyone I have cared for has either died, or left me . . . So don't tell me I would be safer with somebody else, because the truth is, I would just be more scared."

SARAH AVAN

Sarah was born into homelessness. Her parents lived on the streets of LA, both failed creative types working odd jobs. When she was five her father moved out of the city to work as a migrant farmer. For a while he sent money home to the family but after three years the money stopped coming. Her mother raised her on her own. Sarah attended public school until 16, working nights and weekends as a janitor at a retirement home. She dropped out at 16. She often missed work to take care of her ailing mother. She was eventually fired from the nursing home. Her mother died shortly after. With nothing to tie herself to the city and no access to good work she started picking vegetables on farms around California. At first she only cared about getting along. During breaks her friends would discuss upcoming strikes in the area. She started going with them to rallies. She still isn’t sure it’s worth the trouble, but it does give her hope for the future.
